Frontline workers, an essential part of our economy, bravely continue reporting to work to serve us, often at the risk of their health. As a result, it is a clear signal that each country must do its part to ensure that workers are fairly compensated for their efforts.
Essentially, all those who provide essential services to the public are frontline workers. The front line blue-collar workers are also known as deskless workers who belong to considerably low-paid jobs. For instance, sanitation workers, drivers, swipers and so on.
The time has come to recognise their contribution to society at large and extend employment benefits to them to keep them motivated. If we fail to recognise frontline workers’ efforts, then it will have a negative impact on both the economy and our existence.
When a frontline worker becomes ill, the employer should not only ensure that their medical treatment is paid for in full, but they should also provide financial help to the worker in order to speed up their recovery.
This could include bearing the cost of the health food supplies that the worker purchases during the recovery process. If a frontline worker recovers faster and reports back to work, it is a boon to the economy as well. Additionally, providing health insurance and life insurance to the front-line workers can contribute towards creating a motivating work environment.
The employer must also use its database of frontline workers to determine the size of the security stockpile, which includes protective equipment and medical devices. This will enable the employer to safeguard the frontline workforce more rapidly during catastrophes in the future.
Another benefit is the educational expenses of frontline workers. With education costs spiking by the day, it would bring much relief to a frontline worker if he/she was aware that the employer is taking care of their child’s education. This will motivate the worker to be more productive at the workplace.
Frontline workers should also be enlisted for training programmes, to help them learn soft skills which could come in handy at the workplace. Needless to say, upskilling frontline workers can not only future-proof an organisation and bring its goals to fruition, but also help them find better jobs and higher compensation.
Both the governments and organisations should collaborate and appoint a special commission that can decide how benefits would be made available to blue-collar frontline workers from across sectors. What’s more, they can also review or modify a particular benefit provided to a frontline worker from time to time to judge its suitability.
